Frans Hals the Elder was a Dutch painter, notable for his loose painterly brushwork, and helped introduce this lively style of painting into Dutch art. Hals was also influential in the evolution of 17th century group was a master of a technique that utilized something previously seen as a flaw in painting, the visible brushstroke. This picture was probably painted about –17, and is one of the artist's earliest surviving works. That Hals visited his native Antwerp in suggests that the picture's seemingly Flemish qualities—the bright palette, broad brushwork, and impulsive rhythms over the entire surface—may have been inspired partly by contemporaneous pictures by Jacob Jordaens (–) and other.
